This Austrian and German wine event brings two cool climate wine countries together for a comparison tasting. Geography certainly matters in winemaking, and it very much defines these wine regions, with both countries’ wines produced primarily south of the 50th parallel. Think Beaune as well as Haut-Rhin in Alsace, France. Or Everett and Olympia, Washington! These locations result in red and white wines that are higher in acidity with tart, pure fruit flavors. To see what these countries bring to the glass, we will taste 4 sets of wines, comparing one Austrian and one German wine side by side. Will you have a preference? Our finale will be on a sweet note: our guest, Dieter Klippstein has picked out a dessert wine. Will it be Austrian or German?!

Some of you long-time WWS people might remember Dieter Klippstein from our 2003 Austrian wine event. Dieter has been active in the Seattle wine community for over 25 years as a retailer, distributor, and importer, focusing on Northwest and European goods. In 2000 he started Triage wines, importing and distributing estate-grown, limited production wines. Now with Cavatappi Distribuzione, he is still a passionate promoter of wines from Germany and Austria, and has traveled extensively through those countries.

For Omaha, Nebraska native Joy Lindholm, the path to a career in wine began with a love of cooking. That interest lead to fine dining restaurants, where she worked with and developed award winning wine programs. Bon Appetite Magazine recognized Joy’s efforts in 2011, naming her program the “Best One Page Wine List”, which launched the first Summer of Riesling in Omaha the next year. Joy then moved on to wine sales, working with Terry Theise Estate Selections and small prestige producers from all over the world. Her extensive travels in wine regions around the world added to her expertise. She is now a part of New York’s Skurnick Wines, bringing her wine knowledge to us as manager of their West Coast region out of Denver, Colorado.
