FLX: The History of Women in Wine in the FLX: "Members Only" Special Event

Join us this month as we celebrate women in the Finger Lakes wine industry. We have selected three women that represent the best of the FLX, one representing each of the three major lakes within the Finger Lakes wine region.

We will enjoy an intimate, interactive event at Kindred Fare as we hear about the struggles and achievements they have experienced as professional women in the Finger Lakes wine industry. Each of our panelists will share their story while we enjoy two of their wines paired with small bites created for us by the chef at Kindred Fare.

Julia Hoyle
Hosmer Estate Winery
Cayuga Lake

Born in Philadelphia, Julia Hoyle found herself in the Finger Lakes by way of Hobart and William Smith Colleges where she studied French and Women’s Studies. In 2009, as a college student, she took a job in the tasting room at Fox Run Vineyards on Seneca Lake. After taking interest in cellar operations, Julia spent a harvest in the cellar at Atwater Winery before taking a full-time position as assistant winemaker at Sheldrake Point Winery in December of 2013. She came to Hosmer in 2016. Julia’s winemaking style focuses on the quality of fruit with as little as possible added to the wine, in order to make it reflective of the soil, grape, season, and growing conditions. She is very excited about “our extremely diverse and expanding Riesling portfolio” and “our estate red vinifera, especially the Hosmer Cabernet Franc”!

Meaghan Frank
Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery
Keuka Lake

Meaghan, the great-granddaughter of Dr. Konstantin Frank, is the fourth generation winegrower. After Meaghan graduated from high school, she enrolled at Cornell University for a degree in communications. As her interest in wine and the family business grew, Meaghan earned her MBA in wine business from the University of Adelaide, Australia, in 2013. Not settling with one degree, Meaghan completed her second Master’s degree in Enology from Cornell University in December 2015. With combined expertise in wine business and winemaking, Meaghan has revolutionized the way the winery is run as well as the quality of the wines. Meaghan runs the day-to-day operations at the winery with a focus on winemaking direction, staff satisfaction, export markets, and guest experience. At the young age of 30, we have a lot to look forward to.

Jess Johnson
Wagner Vineyards Estate Winery
Seneca Lake

Jess is a lifelong resident of the Finger Lakes from the Wayne County Village of Sodus, graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2011. Soon after, she began in the tasting room at Standing Stone Vineyards, where she spent seven years and worked her way up to becoming the assistant winemaker. Jess joined the Wagner family in 2018, partnering with longtime winemaker Ann Raffetto and assistant winemaker Kevin Lee. Upon Ann’s retirement in 2019, Jess and Kevin took over co-winemaker duties, overseeing Wagner’s 17 grape varietals and 34 different wines. You can find her walking the vineyards, working the many enormous fermentation tanks, testing wines in the cellar, or analyzing in the lab. Expect great things from Jess and for the future of Wagner wines.
