Sending their kids to college in Walla Walla in 2001 inspired a new direction for Karen and Buzz Buckingham. When visiting their kids, Karen and Buzz would go wine tasting, and they became intrigued with the idea of making wine themselves. They started making wine with friends in 2004, and after experiencing how satisfying the process was, starting their own winery may have been inevitable! In 2011, Sol Stone Winery had their first harvest, crafting their debut release in a converted building at their home in Sammamish. Buzz is the winemaker, and Karen, a Master Gardener, has an affinity for the vineyard, along with her own knowledge of the winemaking process. Their tasting room at The Junction is a warm and welcoming space, with a stone fireplace, art on the walls, and an outdoor patio. They host live music, comedy shows, and The Block Party at the Junction on Sunday afternoons during the summer, which features wine tastings and a food truck. Karen will share her wines with us, including some surprise pours, paired with a dinner by one of our favorite chefs, Chef Anne Marie!
We know when Chef Anne Marie cooks for us we are going to have a great dinner, and we are always happy she can be a part of one of our events. She first cooked for us at our Wine and Hard Cider Challenge in 2015. Chef Anne Marie does catering, private and public events, plus she now has her own line of Eatery Goods, a selection of cheeses, meats, crackers and more. Her offerings are designed to enhance your wine tasting experience, and they can be found in a number of tasting rooms in Woodinville. She has planned a lovely summer menu for our evening at Sol Stone Winery!
