WWS Educational Events in January 2012

In addition to the numerous networking and social WWS events taking place throughout the country, as always, WWS has some great upcoming educational programs during January.

The Richmond, VA  Chapter of Women For Wine Sense is hosting an evening of  "The Heat is On!"  Harry Tatian, Wine Consultant for The Country Vintner, will help attendees explore “spicy Zinfandels” from various wine regions to pair with delectables from Benny's Barbeque, to help with the dreary days of winter.  Harry is a native of Richmond, has been in the wine business in Virginia for over 25 years with a great portfolio of wines, catering to independent restaurants and wine shops in Richmond.

The New Jersey Chapter is hosting an evening to explore wines of Chile, and especially those of the Casa Silva Winery.  Family style appetizers will accompany the wines from Chile.  Yum!

The Rochester NY Chapter is offering a session to learn how to decode wine labels and make truly savvy wine buying decisions. French, Italian, and German labels can be cryptic. A wine's label reveals incredible amounts of information about its origin, history, style, quality and more. At the end of the session, attendees should fell confident in their ability to choose a good wine, for any occasion... without even tasting it. This session will help wine lovers understand the information tucked into a wine label and how it can inform their wine-buying choices and enhance their wine drinking experience.

Jennifer de Jong is the presenter and is co-owner of WineSense, a boutique wine store located at 749 Park Avenue in Rochester.  Jennifer is also the former Treasurer of Women For Wine Sense, Rochester Chapter and this year's scholarship recipient.

And remember: the WWS Grand Event is May 4-6, 2012 in the Napa Valley! DO NOT MISS THIS INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY FOR WINE EDUCATION, NETWORKING, SOCIALIZING, FOOD, WINE AND GREAT FUN!

WWS Resources for Chapters
WWS Wine Education Modules
WWS chapters can take advantage of a ‘turnkey curriculum’ that makes it easy to present wine education programs. Sensory Evaluation, the first in a planned series of training modules, is available for all chapters to use. The training module includes learning objectives, time and materials needed, how to market the event, options for tasting choices and sequence, and other tips for facilitating the event. Chapter administrators can access the training module and materials from the website, under Documents-Educational Materials.

WWS Guide for Professional Roundtables

Women for WineSense offers Roundtables--small groups of WWS professional members who are in similar fields in the wine industry, where they can increase their professional knowledge and skills through regular meetings with peers. Chapter Administrators can access a How to guide to establishing and running a Roundtable, in the Documents section of the WWS website.

Outgoing President Karen Jess-Lindsley Reflects on Tenure and Shifts Focus to Starting New Business

Leaving the national President position is bittersweet for Karen. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the national board. It has given me an opportunity to work with an exceptional group of talented and dedicated women who are on the national board and in the chapters. These women are rockstars in my book." She is especially proud of the solid foundation WWS has and is excited about the organization’s future. “Rebecca is bringing a vibrant perspective and will continue to grow and build WWS. I’m 110% behind her.”

What’s next for Karen?

Karen and her husband Alan have developed a dynamic new lighting company, Lindsley Lighting. The company, which works with sustainable materials and green production, designs, produces and sells light fixtures that combine high-end elegant original designs with energy efficient LEDs that emit the warm light color of incandescent bulbs. They currently have 10 new light fixtures in production. Their wall sconces, pendants and pathway lights will have both commercial and residential applications.

As CEO of Lindsley Lighting, Karen will focus her attention on sales and marketing, as well as operations, finance and legal. Alan oversees design, technical and production. “We are your classic garage start-up.” Their very contemporary fixtures are generating a lot of interest in the architectural community. To see some of Lindsley Lighting’s new products visit http://www.lindsleylighting.com/

Despite her busy schedule, Karen will still be involved with Women for WineSense, functioning as Past President on the National Board and working on the 2012 Grand Event.

A Changing of the Guard: WWS Gets New National President Rebecca Moore

2012 ushers in a new year and a new National President for Women for WineSense, Rebecca Moore, who will take the helm effective January 1st. “We all owe Karen Jess-Lindsley a debt of gratitude for her creative and hard work,” said Moore. “She is handing over a strong national organization with 700 members, 11 chapters and growing.”

Rebecca brings over a decade of legal expertise and experience in the wine industry to her new position as National President. Having mentored younger lawyers and advised companies on ways to strengthen their businesses, Moore brings unique management and organizational skills to her new role as National President.

Rebecca grew up in the Napa Valley and wine has always been an integral part of her life: “Wine has always been part of our family dinner table and family celebrations, as well as a vital offering in local restaurants and community events. Wine often bridges gaps and brings people together in new and synergistic ways,” she said. Rebecca’s parents, who developed MonksGate Vineyard in Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley, gave her the opportunity to get hands-on experience in every phase of wine production.

Rebecca obtained her B.A. from U.C. Berkeley and her J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law. In the last several years, Rebecca culminated her career as a litigator in the Bay Area by reaching the level of partner. She has served in various capacities for WWS including Director at Large for both the Napa/Sonoma chapter and the National WWS organization.

Rebecca is also an accomplished outdoorswoman who enjoys being challenged below the surface on scuba trips to the cold water California coast and warmer tropical waters as well above ground by her horse, Citation.

“I appreciate that the national board and chapter presidents have all expressed their support for me,” Rebecca says. “I want to hear from the membership and work with its leaders to empower the chapters and strengthen the organization as a whole. Despite having big shoes to fill, this is going to be an exciting time to guide Women for WineSense.” Email Rebecca at president@womenforwinesense.org

Wine, Music and You

by Carolyn E. Kourofsky, CSW

What pairs best with Malbec—jazz or rock? What’s the best side dish for Syrah—harmonica or sax? The answers surprised us in more ways than one during an evening that combined wine, women and song. Musical accompaniment by the Standard Jazz Quartet was just one of the variables in the clever and eye-opening program “Wine, Music and You” recently presented by Amanda Mari, WWS Rochester’s social media chair. Blind tastings of eight wines were poured in three flights accompanied by delicious food pairings at the Green Lantern Inn. The more than 80 attendees tasted and rated each wine, and chose their favorites.

After dessert, Amanda revealed the surprise rim shot to the evening—our eight wines were really only four, poured from brown bags for two different flights each. How much we liked any one of them may have been influenced by the food paired with it, the music we were enjoying and even the other wines we tasted before or with it. The appropriately named High Notes Malbec from Argentina definitely hit a high C as one of our top three picks of the night, when paired with the first course and a foxtrot. But it didn’t make the cut with beef and Johnny Be Goode. Nearly twice as many people voted the Riesling-like Eugene Carrel et Fils Jongieux from France as one of their top picks when they tried it with chocolate bread pudding and Mustang Sally as did when it was paired with jazz and apple-and-cheddar salad. The standout performer of the night was Castle Rock Columbia Valley Syrah, which made the “top 3” list twice, its smoky and chocolate flavors harmonizing with both the main course and dessert. All in all it was a fun and provocative evening.
