Our Competitors
The Winemaker: John Patterson of Patterson Cellars in Woodinville, Washington
vs.
The Brewer: Whitney Burnside, of Pelican Brewery in Pacific City, Oregon
John Patterson began his wine making career at a younger age than most, assisting his father, Jack, as a young cellar rat in the '80's. Father and son opened Patterson Cellars in 2000, and now, 14 years later, John produces about 5,000 cases a year. Made in an approachable, new world style, he makes 100% varietals and blends from various Washington appellations, including Horse Heaven Hills and Red Mountain, and vineyards such as Ciel du Cheval. He is often inspired to throw something new into his award-winning lineup, making something different depending on where the grapes and his wine making talents take him. As they say at Patterson Cellars: "Serious about wine. Everything else is up for grabs."
Whitney Burnside is originally from the Seattle area, but she is now at home on the Oregon coast as multiple award-winning Pelican Brewery's first female Head Brewer in Pacific City. Her career path was not exactly direct, but it began with a degree in Culinary Arts. Working as an artisan cheesemaker, she began home brewing and knew fermentation was the career for her. It wasn't an easy path, but Whitney says “Brewing, to me, is food", and her goal is to someday open a brewery with an adjacent bakery, a great way of blending her talents. A dedicated Seahawks fan, Whitney created a "12th woman" beer called Seahops Pale Ale in honor of the Hawks.
