NTL: Santa Lucia Highlands – Virtual tasting

About the Experience:

A panel discussion from the Santa Lucia Highlands Wine Artisans, a top tier, grape growing region with dynamite wines and exceptional people behind them.  The discussion will include an overview of the appellation, the vineyards and the behind the scenes, hard-working winemaking teams of the area.  Why is SLH so special and why should we have those wines in our glass today?  You will hear from a winemaker, wine grower and winery owner from the area to discuss the cool climate, coastal region and all it has to offer.  We will celebrate the region's reputation for excellent wines and quality growers while sipping on some of the finest wines from the area.

Panelists:

Jeff Pisoni is the winemaker for Pisoni Family Vineyards. Jeff works alongside his brother, Mark, vineyard manager, and their father, Gary—the “burgundy-crazed” visionary who planted Pisoni Vineyards in 1982, helping to establish the reputation of the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation.

Jeff found his calling to wine early in life as he spent his childhood immersed in the family’s farm and vineyards. He earned his enology degree at the age of twenty-one and gained experience at other wineries before re-joining his family business. Jeff is driven by the interaction of farming and winemaking and strongly believes in hands-off style of winemaking that is led by native yeast fermentations and working with small vineyard blocks to best express a given site.

Annie Lee is Salinas-born and West Point-educated, Annie Lee's journey from the military to the vineyard is as dynamic as it gets. Annie's academic foundation was laid at the US Military Academy at West Point, where she majored in Geospatial Information Sciences.

Upon commissioning as a Field Artillery Officer, she served with the 1st Cavalry Division and was among the first women to serve as a Fire Support Officer in Infantry and Armor units, setting foundational milestones for women in combat roles. Major Lee also deployed with the 1st Cavalry Division to Kuwait and Northern Iraq in support of Operation Spartan Shield.

After a decade of service, she traded her uniform for overalls, cultivating her passion for farming at Carnation Farm in Western Washington. This segued beautifully into her next chapter at Morgan Winery in Salinas, CA, where she delves into Vineyard Management and Business Administration. She channels her passion for service, discipline, and leadership into viticulture alongside her father, Dan Morgan Lee.

Balancing her demanding role at the vineyard and family office, Annie also embraces life as a mother to a daughter, Ada, and as the wife of US Navy Lieutenant Commander Alli Hamel. Annie Lee's transition from a highly decorated officer to a pioneering force in viticulture embodies a journey of courage, dedication, and leadership, both on and off the fields..

Jason Smith has 28 years of growing premium wine grapes, selling wine and coaching the next generation of leaders. His parents, Rich and Claudia Smith followed a personal passion to grow winegrapes and produce wines in Monterey County that spanned over 30 years. As their reputation for quality spread, the business grew and expanded. Today, the second generation of the Smith family, led by CEO Jason Smith, oversees a thriving viticulture business that depends as much on technology and science as it does on people growing winegrapes. And the third generation is continuing the family tradition, with Justin Murphy as the first to fill key operational roles, in winemaking and as Director of Winery Relations & Enologist.

The Santa Lucia Highlands is a small but mighty wine-growing appellation in Monterey County that cultivates California’s best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With generations of family farming, innovation and sustainability as our legacy, our growers and vineyards have earned their place among the state’s most prestigious names for appellation and single-vineyard cool-climate varieties.

Join the vintners and growers to taste three wines and explore one of California's most revered coastal growing regions known for exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, understand how the region's wind shapes the wines and catch up on the 2024 growing season.
