Dallas: An Evening With the Aulers of Fall Creek Vineyards
The Journey: Celebrating Excellence in the Vineyards with Susan & Ed Auler, Fall Creek Vineyards
April is the 12th anniversary of the Dallas chapter of Women for WineSense. We think the best way to celebrate is to focus on the great wine of Texas, and specifically the wines of Fall Creek Vineyards, located in the Hill Country.
It began in 1973 when Susan and Ed Auler took a trip to France to look at cattle for potentially crossing with their Angus herd in the Hill Country. They also visited the major wine regions in France …they ended up spending more time with wine, than with cattle.
In 1975, the Aulers put in a test plot on a corner of their Fall Creek Ranch to experiment with wine growing. That test plot grew from ¼ acre to 7 ½ acres. Another 400 acres were added, and became the home of Fall Creek Vineyards, rooted in time and place in the Texas Hill Country.
Susan founded the Texas Hill Country Wine & Food Festival in 1986 to publicize the Texas Hill Country wine region.
In 1990, Ed’s application to the U.S. government to create the Texas Hill Country appellation was granted. This identified the Texas Hill Country region as a recognized and respected viticultural region.
Recently, James Suckling rated the 2016 ExTERRA Tempranillo
Outstanding American Wine
in his
American Wine Revolution
, including five top-score reviews, reinforcing that great wines are made in Texas.
